I’m a dog person through and through, but if there’s one other pet that can melt my heart, it’s a guinea pig. Recently I had the pleasure of interviewing Carrie Homman for a Guideposts article, No Gifts Please, Just Compassion. She told me all about their guinea pig Charley.

The family, including sons Adam and Aaron, wanted a pet and had been looking for a dog. After much thought, they agreed that they didn’t have the time needed to devote to a dog, so they went to the local animal shelter, and walked out with a guinea pig!

If you’re going to get a guinea pig, I definitely suggest looking at your shelter or on Petfinder for a guinea pig in need of a home.

Carrie says that she never knew how amazing guinea pigs were. Together, they’ve discovered that Charley is trainable, loves to cuddle, and communicates through squeaks, purrs and tugs. “He makes us laugh all the time,” she says.

Adam and Aaron love to play with Charley and take good care of his needs, including feeding and brushing. Aaron greets Charley first thing every morning and gets a little cuddle time before starting the day. They’ve learned so much about guinea pigs. Adam even created a fair project about guinea pig care.

As you can see, guinea pigs can make great pets!

Can you find Charley?
