Welcome to Peggy and Kelly’s Wednesday Diet Tip! The weather has started to turn warm and springlike, and for me that means only one thing–ice cream! This could be my greatest dieting challenge. I love going out for soft ice cream cones (back home in Vermont we called them creamees.) But what are the options for those of us watching fat and calories?

Your column today could not have come at a better time! A friend and I took a long walk yesterday and rewarded ourselves with a stop at a local ice cream eatery. Having been recently diagnosed with diabetes i searched the menu board for a sugar-free option. They had five or six flavors, and I selected the black rasberry. Well, long story short, a few hours later I found myself in great gastric distress (bloating and cramping). Today I attended my weekly “diabetes class” and asked the instructor about this dietary dilemma. “Sugar-free does not mean sugar-free”. More often than not, sugar-free options contain “sugar alcohols” (which are neither sugar or alcohol) that raise your glycemic level just like “real” sugar”. Worse yet, they also cause a “laxation” effect. So, the information gleaned from my class today is eat your ice cream, try to choose a low fat option, and eat a smaller than normal amount. Hope this helps! Thanks for your nutritional info – I think I’ll stick to a low fat option next time!
